Kiran Bedi Miracle woman

Dr Kiran Bedi
This Woman is AMAZING

Here are my notes.

Indian Vision Foundation

Career from teacher to first woman in the Police Dept in 1974.

Determined that Police Dept doesn't reach out. Not Reactionary.

Prison reform
Arrest was prevention. Afterward you focus on reformation. First time
applied in India. Have an audience that you can reform. Detention
generates anger, frustration and power (from working out) generates
even more outrage.

Prison became like an asram. Promote inner peace, meditation,
vegetarian dining.
Her book, It's Always Possible, is hailed throughout the world
describes her approach.

Another book. I Dare

Need to measure how many people you prevent from going to jail.

Traffic management. Huge task.

Two NGOs focused on women, power and children. True measure of a
woman is how much she has given back to women and children. Plant
trees that will Bear fruit for successive generations. Give more than
you take.

Many criminals are drug adicts. Extremely high correltion with drug
adicts and domestic abuse and street violence. Looking for cash.

Education for children. Get them away from rag picking and begging.

TV Judge Judy of India
Adjudicate with volunteers who opened up their issues to the public.
On the Star Channel. Find on YouTube. 114 program taped. All about
teaching legal eights.

Marriage in India is a huge drain on resources. She just got married
at the temple -- no fanfare. Lives in another cityfrim her husband.
Distance is good for their marriage. See each other when they want to.

Towed away Indira Ghandi's car. Larger message. The rule of law begins
at the top.

Corruption is the worst problem in the country. More infomation means
more open society. Started a feedback box in the prison. Checked drug
abuse and corruption dramatically. The lower echelons were petrified
of having their transgression recvealed to their superiors.

Women's movement brought in recognition of crimes against women. Had
been a huge gap between laws and implementation.

2005 Domestic Violence Act. Had been considered a family affair. Not
anymore. Tide is turning.

Indians don't have jury trials. Conflict between mother- in-law and
wives often escalates. Wives often don't understand that since the
mother-in-law owns the house, they aren't entitles to stay in that
house.

Children of incarcerated women stay with their mothers in prison until
the girls are four years old. Runs a daycare center in the prison.
Mother gets taught literacy, children exposed to school and learning.
Breaks the cycle. After 4, gets moved to a residential school.

PMA. Positive mental attitude. Incredible energy. Multitasking.

Acid Victims
Guy has gone nuts. Obsessed with the victim. Action against the
perpetrator must be swift and enforced quickly. Otherwise the victim
keeps on being a victim.

Women need to be educated that the first slap is reported. Anger
escalates. Stop it early. Don't let the frustration and anger grow.
