Bangladeshi Women's clothing

As promised I have tried to take special note of what women wear in
Bangladesh and India.

In Bangladesh, traditional clothing seems to be the norm -- saris and
salwar kameez (long tunic and pants). These are in vivid colors with
beautiful shawls draped backward over their shoulders. Patterns mix
beautifully.

These clothes were pervasive from the villagers to the more affluent
individuals. I can count on one hand the number of Bangladeshi women i
saw wearing western clothes.

What is really striking is the richness of the fabrics and colors.
Us world weary travelers certainly felt somewhat like faded flowers
next to their vibrant colors and rich fabrics.

On another note, the politicians were making strong points about the
growth of the garment manufacturing business in Bangladesh. Apparently
2 million women are working in that industry which is a significant
portion of their exports. They claimed that it was a key determinant
in empowering women. In this morning's paper, there was an article
that these same garment workers are on strike since they havent been
paid in months.
